HG is a local favorite, and definitely one of my top choices when dining out. I've not had a bad experience here before. Service can get a bit slow when they're busy, but the atmosphere makes up for it. This is a nice place to sit and relax, great beer, good food... a great place to take some friends out.

The ESB brew was great.

The nightmare started when the food arrived. We made the mistake of trying a special quail dish. This place is not ready for upscale menu offerings.

The quail arrived nearly uncooked. It was hot, but so poorly cooked that only the small legs/wings could be eaten. The rest was nearly raw. My wife's salad had wilted lettuce and was very small. The gyro was fine.

Upon telling the waitress that it was bad (not cooked) she acted like it was no big deal and offered no assistance. We just paid and left to cut our losses (12 hour drive, kids complaining of smoke, tired).

I would stick to a burger or sandwich.

On second thought...I would stick to just the beer.

p.s. unless you are a smoker...you will hate this place's atmosphere. Being in SC nearly everyone smokes (duh) and the balcony gets it from those around you and those below. Non-smokers steer clear.

Near the state Capitol, this place is a hidden gem. The service is top notch; friendly is an understatement. Be careful of this place because it will spoil you and you will hold other places to these high standards! This is the best local Brewery with fabulous tasting ribeye steaks and duck. We ordered Cajun Shrimp and Black Beans for an appetizer. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned and cooked just the right amount of time. Even the beans and chips were good. The chef knows what he is doing in the kitchen and the brew master knows how to make beer. I love a good tasting Ale and this beer was clean without any bad after taste. A home run. Beer costs a respectable $3.50. You MUST visit this place and order the ribeye steak! Food is better than the Liberty Tap Room & Grill off Gervais Street and that says a lot. The atmoshere is relaxed on the day I went. I noticed an open stage so maybe on weekends that place kicks it up a notch.

This brewpub in Columbia is indeed world class. They have great beer selections and nice atmosphere. The food is great and the chef specials are a must. They have bands on weekends so this is a great place to relax and have good conversation.

PROS: Good beer, service, and atmosphere.
